Capacity Gaps Impeding Efforts to Curb Pre-Eclampsia/Eclampsia Related Maternal Mortality

A 2023 UN report highlighted that 1 in 19 women in Nigeria face a lifetime risk of dying from birth-related complications, with pre-eclampsia and eclampsia being significant contributors.

In collaboration with Ferring Pharmaceuticals, SCIDaR conducted research in Kano State to identify gaps in managing these conditions.

The study revealed that 98% of primary healthcare providers have not received training in managing these conditions in over five years, leading to underutilisation of essential medicines like magnesium sulfate. The findings are a wake-up call, underscoring the urgent need for revitalised training programs, heightened community awareness, and bold, innovative strategies to safeguard the lives of mothers and their babies across Nigeria.
