Every day, Nigerians share personal data – when making payments, accessing healthcare, or shopping online. Protecting that data is essential to building trust in a growing digital economy.

SCIDaR is pleased to announce the publication of its article, “Regulatory Compliance: Best Practices, Challenges and Enforcement under the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDP Act) and Global Frameworks,” in the 2nd Edition of the International Journal of Data Privacy and Protection published by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC).

The article examines how Nigeria’s Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023 compares with global standards such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the United Kingdom’s Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, and South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and highlights a central issue – while it is true that the legal framework is evolving, effective implementation will determine its true impact.

It also identifies key challenges, including regulatory capacity, compliance costs for businesses, and limited public awareness of privacy rights. Addressing these issues will be critical to building trust, enabling innovation and supporting Nigeria’s participation in the global digital economy.

The research also provides practical recommendations to strengthen enforcement, improve compliance and deepen public understanding of data protection.

SCIDaR’s commitment to personal data privacy extends beyond research. We operate in line with globally and nationally recognised standards, as evidenced by our ISO/IEC 27001 certification for Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) – the international benchmark for managing sensitive information, as well as our registration with the NDPC as a data controller/processor of major importance and the award of a compliance Trustmark by the NDPC. These credentials align our data protection, information security and privacy practices with the requirements of both the ISO and NDP Act, thereby strengthening our internal controls, risk management processes, and continuous compliance monitoring.
